Common Questions
Why another internet exchange?
We're a free community & volunteer run internet exchange, originally created by our founding members to simplify interconnections between ourselves, but open to connections from other people.
We hope to foster better connections - both technical and social - between ourselves and the other small networks in our datacenter.
Despite our humble origins, we do take ourselves seriously, and follow industry best practices:
- Our route servers implement comprehensive prefix filtering to protect against route hijacks and similar issues,
- We automatically filter various kinds of broadcast and multicast traffic that shouldn't be present on an IXP fabric (such as discovery protocols like LLDP and CDP), and
- When performing maintenance, we implement BCP 214 BGP session culling to prevent the creation of traffic blackholes.
What do I need to be able to join?
You need an ASN, one or more publically routable IP blocks, and the ability to light a cross connect to us. See our connection documentation
How much does it cost to connect?
Our monthly fee for a 1000BASE-LX or 10GBASE-LR cross connect is €0. We might ask you to supply your own optic and patch cable, or we can supply them at their cost to us.
What's your SLA?
100% uptime, or you get a full refund of your €0 monthly fee.
We're run by volunteers; we'll attempt to fix any problems promptly, but we all have day jobs and can't guarantee any fix timelines (especially in cases of hardware failures).
If you need an internet exchange where there's an SLA and 24/7 on-call staff to respond to incidents, you're probably on thr wrong website. Consider BCIX instead - they're wondrous people and they do a very good job. (In fact, if you're going to join just one IXP in Berlin, make it BCIX)
